Shin Matsunaga

Born in Tokyo, Japan in 1940. Graduated from Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music. Among his works are: the book design for the best-selling book Nihon-koku Kenpo (Visual Constitution of Japan), package design for selling products like Scottie (tissue paper) and Can Chu-Hi (canned spirits) and corporate identity design for The Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi. He won the international competition for the new packaging of French cigarette "Gitanes". He works genre-free in a wide range of areas from graphic designs for posters and corporate identities to sculptures and monuments. Many pieces of his work are in the permanent collections of 36 places in the world including the Museum of Modern Art in New York. / EXHIBITIONS : Large-scale solo exhibitions have been held in Warsaw, New York, Belgium and other places in the world. • Exhibition of all his works "Graphic Cosmos - The World of Shin Matsunaga", a museum project, is touring throughout Japan from 1996 to 1998. • Solo exhibition titled "Shin Matsunaga Design World" was held at The Saison Museum of Art, Tokyo,1997. / AWARDS : Mainichi Design Award • Gold Medal and Prize of Honour, International Poster Biennial, Warsaw • Education Minister's Art Encouragement Prize for Freshman / PUBLICATIONS : Matsunaga Shin no Design (The Design Works of Shin Matsunaga), Kodan-sha • Graphic Cosmos-Matsunaga Shin Design no Sekai (Graphic Cosmos-The World of Shin Matsunaga), Shuei-sha
